If you want to get ready for that Zoom or face-to-face interview, then there is one more powerful change that can make your resume a true “standout.” Let’s review the three powerful moves to guarantee a path to your dream job:
- Change your resume format from chronological to functional
- Use the language of your profession
- Showcase your accomplishments using strong action verbs
Each resume change gets you ready for a stream of responses that can lead to your six-figure payday.
Resumes are meant to hone in on your talents and skills. They are your entryway to catching the attention of a recruiter or hiring manager.
Key Questions
“What work have you performed that demonstrates you are poised to take on this new job?“
“What skills and talents were utilized previously to achieve your various job elements?”
– SKILLS MATCH
Verbs
The use of powerful verbs to demonstrate what actions you’ve taken in your past jobs is the real topper. Verbs are the unique expressions that validate tasks you have performed. Plain verbs simply won’t do. Powerful verbs instantly promote your resume for the hire.
Accomplishments
Accomplishments are another way to spotlight your achievements, and are superior to simple descriptions of your duties and responsibilities. According to Michael Tomaszewski, there are key types of achievements to list and smartly incorporate in your resume:
- Revenue or sales you increased for the company
- Money you saved for the company
- Time you saved for the company
- Problems you identified and solved
- Ideas or innovations you introduced
- Procedures or systems you developed, implemented, or optimized
- Special projects you worked on during your tenure.
For example, stating a manager’s accomplishment as follows is the winner’s dream:
Directed a 45 cross-generational engineering team to design the next gen aircraft with smart tools. This team composition resulted in a cost savings of over $45M in six short years by reducing 100 manpower billets.
Action Plan:
- Google the power verbs for your profession
- Outline your 3-4 key achievements for each functional resume section
Takeaway: Leave the impression that you are accomplished in your profession and answer the “in what” for the reviewer.
Next, clear your lines and voice messages for the onslaught of calls.
